How to remove windows.old folder

Hi friends! You might have got irritated when you see the error “can’t delete this file” when attempting to delete windows.old folder!

What is windows.old folder?

Some of you might not know about windows.old file. I would like to tell them that it’s a windows folder that gets created when you install a fresh copy of windows in the same drive where it was previously installed but the drive was not
formatted. Installing windows doesn’t mean formatting. Formatting means deleting all data form the particular drive. The created windows.old contains backup data of the drive in which windows is installed. Backup is made from previous windows. If you don’t need them, you can delete them. This wont cause any harm to system. But if you try to delete them with simple delete command then it will give error after deleting some file. This folder consumes minimum 17 GB of our hard disk. So it need to be deleted.

Here is the way to delete the folder:

      1.       Go to “My computer”.
2.       Write click the drive in which  window is installed.
3.       Click properties.
4.       On “General” tab, click on “Disk clean up”.

5.       Click on Clean up system files.

      6.   If asked for permission, click yes.
7.       Click OK.
8.       Now, window will ask whether you want to permanently delete the files.
9.       Click “Delete files”.

10.       Wait for few minutes.
11.   It will take approx. 15-20 minutes to delete all files because file size is very large.
12.   You are done! You have freed up your hard disk.

Enjoy hacking.
